Slack does not explicitly show when you are idle, but it does indicate your activity status in a few ways.
When you are actively using Slack, a green dot appears next to your name, signaling to others that you are online and available.
However, if you are inactive for a certain period, Slack automatically changes your status to "away."
Here’s how Slack determines your status:
-
Active status: When you are using Slack, whether on your computer or mobile device, a green dot appears next to your profile picture. This indicates to your team that you are currently active and available to communicate.
-
Away status: If you do not interact with Slack for a while, the green dot disappears, and your status changes to "away." This happens automatically after a period of inactivity, which is typically set by your organization or Slack’s default settings.
-
Manual status updates: You can also manually set your status to "away" or any other custom status. This allows you to communicate your availability to your team, even if you are not actively using Slack.
-
Mobile and desktop: The status updates apply to both mobile and desktop versions of Slack. If you are using Slack on your phone, it will still show your status based on your activity.
